How to fix a computer that won't start 

 

 

 

 
 
 
1) Restart your system and continue pressing F8 until you see the above menu.
 
2) Boot into safe mode ( here ) , and select "Last known Good Configuration".
 
3) Boot into safe mode ( here ) , and perform a system restore (here ).
 
    System restore from command prompt ( here ). 
 
4) Run chkdsk to verify you disk ( BSOD  ).
 
5) Enable boot logging on Safe mode screen (look at  Enable boot logging on picture above. The Boot Logging text is recorded in the Ntbtlog.txt file in the %SystemRoot% folder. Compare the bootlog generated during a safemode boot
against the failing boot.
 
 
 
6) Safe mode with command prompt and run this command at the dos prompt "BootRec.exe".
 
7) When you attempt to start Microsoft Windows XP, the black startup screen may be briefly displayed, and then your computer restarts repeatedly.  ( here )
 
8) If you see and an error similar to this:
"Windows NT could not start because the below file is missing or corrupt:  C:\Winnt\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe" go ( here ).

9) if you can boot into safe mode, run driver verifier ( here ).

 

10) Repair xp ( here ). 

 

11) Xp boot options ( here ).

Restart your computer and select recovery console menu item.

List of commands available from the recovery console.
Disable servicenameDisables a service or driver.
Enable servicenameEnables a service or driver.

DiskPart [/add|/delete] [device|drive|partition]

 If the partition is being added, [size]

Adds or deletes a disk partition. size specifies the size of the new partition.
FixBoot [driveletter]Replaces the Windows XP boot sector in the system partition or on the disk specified by driveletter (if specified).
FixMBR devicenameRepairs the master boot record (MBR) of the boot partition. This is used if the MBR has become corrupted and Windows XP cannot start.
ListSVCLists the services and whether they are automatically or manually started.
LogonLists the available system to log on to, requests the administrative password, and then logs you on to a Windows XP installation.
Map arcLists all connected drives. The arc command will list them in ARC paths instead of drive letters. ARC paths are used in the boot.ini file to specify the local drives to boot from.
SystemRootSets the current directory to systemroot.
ChkDskChecks the status of a disk.
 

Enter the command FIXBOOT at the Recovery Console prompt that appears. This option installs new bootable files on your hard drive. Answer Y(es) when prompted to write a new boot sector. Enter the command FIXBOOTto re-create the master boot record.
